KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tonight likened the sacrifice made in complying with Covid-19 standard operating procedures, such as not crossing state lines and conducting house visits for Hari Raya Aidiladha, as a “great jihad” to save lives.
The prime minister, in a televised speech tonight in conjunction with the celebration tomorrow, said although the government has enforced restrictions set by the National Security Council, the festival remains joyful.
“You have to continue staying home and celebrate Aidiladha with the family in a moderate manner. The guidelines and SOPs issued by the authorities must be adhered to, as they are also meant to uphold the religious responsibility to save lives.
“The good news is, we have allowed Aidiladha and Friday prayers with an expanded capacity of 50 congregants. The SOPs will be decided according to the requirements of each state, and with the consent of the rulers.”
He said frontliners, comprising healthcare workers, security personnel, civil servants, volunteers and non-governmental organisation members, have made great sacrifices in the battle against Covid-19 since last year.
“I truly appreciate their sacrifices, and I pray that the sacrifices by frontliners, and the public in general, are rewarded by Allah SWT.”
He said many Muslims are saddened at having to defer their haj due to the Saudi Arabian government’s decision not to allow pilgrims into the kingdom given the coronavirus situation.
He called on the faithful to accept the decision with patience and an open mind, and expressed hope that their wish to undertake the pilgrimage can be realised next year.
“We pray to Allah for the pandemic to end soon. Allah’s help and mercy are with His servants who always work hard, are patient and have trust in His plans. Inshaallah, we will succeed.
“Along with my wife and family, I wish all Muslims in Malaysia, especially our frontliners who have sacrificed time and energy to ensure our safety and health, Selamat Hari Raya Aildiladha, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.” – Bernama, July 19, 2021
