KUALA LUMPUR – It is another five-digit day for Malaysia as the country logged 13,034 fresh Covid-19 cases today.
After yesterday’s record-high deaths of 199, the daily death cases dipped slightly today at 134, bringing the toll to 7,574.
Selangor remains top of the list with 6,049 new cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur’s 1,611 infections.
Other states with three-digit caseloads are Johor (791), Negri Sembilan (711), Kedah (701), Sarawak (644), Sabah (497), Terengganu (391), Penang (371), Melaka (353), Perak (284), Pahang (261), Kelantan (240), and Putrajaya (100).
Meanwhile, Labuan has 24 cases and Perlis six.
Cumulatively, the country has a total of 964,918 cases and 815,293 recoveries.
Today, 938 cases are in intensive care and 459 are in need of ventilator aid.
Of the new cases today, 13 (0.1%) are category five (critical with ventilator aid), 72 (0.5%) are category four (in need of oxygen), 124 (1.0%) are category three (with lung inflammation), 5,646 (43.3%) are category two (light symptoms), and 7,179 (66.1%) are category one (no symptoms).
Of the 134 deaths reported today, Selangor claims 39, Kuala Lumpur (32), Negri Sembilan (18) and Johor (15).
Perak and Melaka have seven each; Pahang has five; Kedah with four; Penang, Terengganu and Labuan have two each, Sabah has one.
Sarawak sees surge again, Kuching highest
Meanwhile, Sarawak saw a sudden surge in Covid-19 infections again today, after a week of reduced cases.
A total of 644 new cases were reported statewide, said the State Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a press statement.
Kuching district saw 258 cases, while Saratok had 131, Miri 126, Sri Aman 25, and other districts had 20 cases or below.
Two new longhouse clusters were detected in Saratok district.
The Ulu Semulau cluster saw 57 people being hit during a longhouse gathering, and the Abu Buyang cluster led to 33 being infected.
As no new deaths were reported today, the official coronavirus death toll in the state stands at 450.
Infectivity rate above 1.0, another 32 clusters
The nation’s infectivity rate (R0) stands at 1.09.
Terengganu remains the state with the highest R0 with 1.31, followed by Kedah (1.25), Sabah (1.21), Penang (1.21), Johor (1.20), Pahang (1.19), Putrajaya (1.18), Kelantan (1.18), Selangor (1.15), Perak (1.12), Negri Sembilan (1.10), Melaka (1.10) and Kuala Lumpur (1.07).
Meanwhile, the ministry reported 32 new clusters, of which 21 involved workplaces in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Melaka, Pahang, Kedah, Sarawak and Sabah, totalling 1,208 cases.
Seven community clusters in Johor, Kelantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu led to 259 cases, while two private education institutions registered under the Education Ministry in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur have 29 cases.
Two clusters involving high-risk groups in Kedah and Kuala Lumpur totalled 66 cases. – The Vibes, July 22, 2021
