KUALA LUMPUR – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has managed to amass RM715,573 within 24 hours, following a public crowdfunding effort related to his court charges.
It is understood the money will be used to cover costs for bail and the Muda lawmaker's legal fees.
In an Instagram post today, Syed Saddiq expressed thanks to the public for their support, adding that he is indebted to Malaysia.
“I owe my life to Malaysia. 24 hours, RM715,573.55 was raised. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
“I am forever indebted,” Syed Saddiq wrote.
The former youth and sports minister said he closed the crowdfunding as he had received more than enough money to post his bail of RM330,000.
He also shared a heartwarming story of how an elderly man visited his office, prompting Syed Saddiq to assume he was there to ask for welfare assistance.
It turned out that the elderly man gave Syed Saddiq RM10 as a donation for his legal fees and bail.
“I felt like crying.
“It’s in moments like this, I am reminded why I joined politics. It’s not about position or money, but to build a progressive and proud Malaysia,” he added.
Syed Saddiq then continued his message of defiance against the Perikatan Nasional administration, stating the more pressure they exert on him, the more he would fight back.
“No threats, no intimidation, no offers will ever weaken my resolve to put Malaysia first,” he said.
The Muar MP was charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday for criminal breach of trust concerning an alleged misappropriation of RM1 million belonging to his former party Bersatu.
If found guilty, he could face a jail term not exceeding 10 years, whipping, and a fine under Section 406 of the Penal Code.
Syed Saddiq was also charged with misusing a RM120,000 donation for his 2018 general election campaign, which could see him being subject to a jail term of six months to five years, a fine, and whipping under Section 403 of the Penal Code. – The Vibes, July 23, 2021
