KUALA LUMPUR – Issues related to the revocation of the emergency ordinances continue to be a hot topic at the special meeting of the Dewan Rakyat today with several opposition MPs demanding immediate explanation and clarification.
R.S.N. Rayer (PH-Jelutong) asked about the status of individuals that have been charged after July 21.
Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the cabinet had decided to revoke the ordinances that came into force during the current emergency and would not advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to proclaim an extension of the ongoing emergency after its scheduled end on August 1.
Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, who presided over the meeting, then said that Takiyuddin would give further explanation and answers to the issue on Monday.
At a press conference in Parliament today, Rayer questioned the implications of the announcement on individuals that have been charged over the past week under the emergency ordinance.
“Yesterday, lawyers in Penang told me that people are still being brought to court under the emergency ordinance.
“Legal advisors, the attorney-general’s office, and the head of prosecution at every state say they have yet to receive any orders on this matter.”
Rayer said that many individuals are still being issued compounds amounting to thousands of ringgit.
“Is it true that these ordinances have been revoked by the cabinet?
“Before they are revoked, they have to be tabled in Parliament to be discussed. Only then can they be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“Why do we have to wait until Monday? There have been no documents released on this. What is going to happen to individuals who have to go to court?” he asked.
Rayer said the speaker should not be a “spokesperson” for the government.
“I plead to the speaker to not be a spokesperson for the government and to hand responsibilities over to the relevant ministers.
“Yesterday when it was time for the prime minister to speak, he was nowhere to be found. Today, YB Kota Baru is missing while we are questioning this matter.”
He said that if there are any documents that can confirm that the emergency ordinances were canceled, they should be presented and explained in Dewan Rakyat as soon as possible,” Rayer added. – The Vibes, July 27, 2021
