KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor’s Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah will revoke titles and awards from government officials or politicians found to have committed corruption.
The palace, in a post on the Selangor Royal Official Instagram page, said the sultan expressed disappointment over recent graft incidents involving state government officials that have tarnished the administration and other officials’ image.
“The sultan stressed that any government official in Selangor found guilty of graft or breach of trust will face disciplinary action and punishment that is proportionate to the offence committed.”
The ruler extended his gratitude to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for fighting graft in the state.
“Sultan Sharafuddin urged MACC to continue conducting transparent and thorough investigations, and to obtain strong evidence to ensure those who commit graft do not escape the appropriate sentencing.
“The sultan also reminded that corruption and abuse of power are acts that can ruin society and affect the country.”
In an immediate response, MACC chief Datuk Seri Azam Baki in a statement said the Selangor ruler’s remarks show his deep concern and strict stance on the matter.
“I highly welcome and praise the stance taken by the sultan with regard to MACC carrying out its duties to conduct investigations transparently and with strong evidence to ensure those who commit graft do not escape punishment.
“Therefore, MACC also urges the public, including the people of Selangor, to take heed of the sultan’s decree so that similar incidents do not recur, while making Malaysia free from corruption.”
On Saturday, a district official and quantity surveyor were remanded for five days at the Putrajaya magistrates’ court following the arrest of two senior Selangor officials and a contractor in a graft case understood to involve a syndicate allegedly controlling projects worth millions since 2012. – The Vibes, July 28, 2021
