SHAH ALAM – Sirim Bhd will work with the Institute of Medical Research (IMR), Universiti Putra Malaysia and Ipoh’s Veterinary Research Institute in the initial stages of developing Covid-19 vaccines in Malaysia.
Group president and chief executive Datuk Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said Sirim has the capability to carry out testing for jabs developed by the three institutions.
“Sirim is ready to play the important role of providing assurance in the development of local vaccines, ensuring they comply with international safety, efficacy and manufacturing standards,” he told a press conference at the Sirim-Selangor drive-through vaccination programme today.
“We have held discussions with IMR to contribute to the development of vaccines at the pre-clinical stage, and vaccine production on a pilot scale.”
He said Sirim can conduct testing at the Industrial Biotechnology Research Centre, which meets the criteria set out by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
He added that Sirim previously carried out multi-stage testing of the Sinovac vaccine to ensure the final product is both safe and effective.
