KUALA LUMPUR – Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, in a dig at embattled Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin, took to Twitter today to show that Perikatan Nasional has lost its majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Pontian MP said following the withdrawal of 11 MPs’ support for PN, Muhyiddin only has 103 lawmakers on his side.
“Simple maths. It is said that 31 (Umno MPs) support Muhyiddin out of 42, thus, 42 - 31 = 11 (Umno MPs) not supporting him (actually there are more).
“The government previously had 114 (MPs). Minus 11, and only 103 MPs remain.
“Total MPs are 222. Two have died, and 220 remain. A majority requires 110 + 1 = 111.
“Surely 103 is not more than 111. In short, 103 is not a majority.”
The post comes after Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s announcement this morning that a total of 31 BN lawmakers agree that PN should continue to govern until a confidence motion is tabled in the Dewan Rakyat next month.
The Bera MP also produced a list of names with signatures supposedly of those in support of the Muhyiddin-led administration.
However, Tg Karang MP Tan Sri Noh Omar and Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (Baling) later said their signatures merely meant that they attended the meeting organised by Ismail Sabri.
In a further blow to Muhyiddin’s chances of retaining the majority, Parit Sulong MP Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad this evening announced that she is quitting as higher education minister, making her the second Umno leader to quit the cabinet in under a week after Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah let go of the energy and natural resources portfolio. – The Vibes, August 6, 2021
