KUALA LUMPUR – The Johor sultan has expressed disappointment with leaders disturbing the government and jostling for power amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in a statement called on Muslim leaders to reflect on the lessons taught in Islam, in conjunction with the Maal Hijrah celebration today.
“I’m disappointed with leaders disturbing the government and jostling for power at a time when the rakyat are depressed and facing numerous difficulties brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“On the occasion of the new Hijrah year 1443 today, I call on all Muslim leaders, especially the Malay leaders of this country, to reflect on the lessons we have been taught, where the power to rule is the will of Allah SWT.”
He stressed that leaders must be honourable and trustworthy in discharging their duties, and prioritise the people and Muslim unity.
“Prioritise the rakyat and unity of the ummah, not your selfish interests to the detriment of the nation’s harmony and political balance.
Now is the time for you to jostle to help the rakyat, not jostle for power and influence.”
Yesterday, Umno made public two letters outlining the stand of 14 of its MPs who are no longer supporting Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and his Perikatan Nasional government.
This effectively means Muhyiddin has lost majority support in Parliament, unless he is able to woo opposition MPs to his side.
Announcing Umno’s withdrawal of support last Tuesday, party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the prime minister has lost his legitimacy and ought to step down.
A PN administration source told The Vibes that all party leaders from the ruling coalition are expected to have a showdown meet with the Pagoh lawmaker tomorrow.
The talks will purportedly be held at Muhyiddin’s residence in the afternoon, following the conclusion of a cabinet meeting.
The source said the meet will discuss PN’s future following the Umno MPs’ withdrawal of support. – The Vibes, August 10, 2021
