KOTA KINABALU – All Perikatan Nasional (PN) party leaders are expected to have a showdown meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
According to a source within the PN administration, the meeting will be held at Muhyiddin’s residence in the afternoon following the conclusion of the cabinet meeting.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told The Vibes that the meeting was to discuss PN’s future following the withdrawal of support by several Umno MPs recently.
“The situation does not look good. It seems PN no longer has the numbers,” he said.
Sabah Star president and Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan is believed to be on his way to the capital today.
Other party leaders aligned to PN in Sabah, the source added, have also taken flights to Kuala Lumpur.
The latest development comes as Muhyiddin’s position as prime minister continues to be questioned by many parties following the withdrawal of support by at least 15 Umno MPs.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reportedly also sent statutory declarations reaffirming the withdrawal of support from PN and Muhyiddin to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Opposition MPs from Pakatan Harapan, Warisan, Pejuang, and Parti Sarawak Bersatu, as well as Muda’s Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and independent Maszlee Malik followed suit as well.
It is learnt that the delivery of SDs is to ensure that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can recommend to Muhyiddin that a vote of confidence should be held before the Dewan Rakyat sittings kick off in September.
The Pagoh MP had said he would only test his majority in September, triggering criticisms from MPs across both sides of the divide calling for the vote to be held sooner.
Muhyiddin is expected to meet the king tomorrow morning for the weekly pre-cabinet meeting briefing before chairing it.
At present, the withdrawal of support by several Umno MPs led by Zahid has technically resulted in Muhyiddin losing his majority support to be the prime minister. – The Vibes, August 10, 2021
