KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has detained Johor Baru City Council Mayor Datuk Adib Azhari Daud for allegedly accepting bribes from contractors in exchange for granting project approvals.

The 60-year-old was arrested at the state MACC office about 3pm today to facilitate investigations, reported The Star.

In a statement, state MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrest and said a remand application will be made tomorrow at the Johor Baru magistrates’ court.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

He faces a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribes, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

According to the Malay Mail, Adib allegedly committed the offence when he was mayor of the Iskandar Puteri City Council.

Batu Pahat MACC investigators took him in after their probe showed that the senior state government officer purportedly received bribes from contractors as an inducement to approve projects.

The alleged crime took place before November 2019.
