KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council contends that the loosening of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the fully vaccinated is a sign that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration has failed to curb the spread of Covid-19.
In a statement today, the council said that the announcement by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in allowing more perks for those who have passed 14 days after their second vaccination shows that lockdowns and the state of emergency have failed to curb the pandemic, which has taken more than 11,000 lives and infected 1.3 million Malaysians up to yesterday.
“Although many may feel relieved with these restrictions, we must take heed towards the reminders laid out by healthcare professionals concerning the public health system.
“This includes increasing allocations to treat Covid-19 patients by increasing ICU beds, oxygen concentrators and tests following protocols set by the World Health Organisation (WHO),” the council said.
Highlighting Sabah’s low vaccination rate, it said the government should focus on increasing the immunisation rate in all states by August 31.
With the resumption of tourism activities and dine-ins in states under Phase 2 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), the council said it is also crucial to ensure there are proper SOPs related to ventilation at hotels and restaurants.
“The government must also assist these premises to ensure that their staff members have received at least their first dose.”
The council also reiterated its call for the government to implement a RM45 billion fiscal injection for workers, businesses and the healthcare sector to save lives and livelihood, and to ensure equal recovery for those affected by the lockdown implemented since June 1.
Muhyiddin had on Sunday announced perks for the fully vaccinated.
These include allowing long-distance couples to cross state lines, as well as for parents to visit children under 18 years old.
Other perks include crossing district lines for those in Phase 2 states, as well as dining-in at restaurants.
Fully vaccinated individuals in Phase 2 states can engage in non-contact outdoor activities and sports, and visit houses of worship, while those returning to Malaysia can undergo mandatory quarantine at home.
