JOHOR BARU – A government retiree has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for allegedly acting as a middleman for a Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) officer seeking gratification.
A source said the 60-year-old man was arrested at the Johor MACC office about 9pm yesterday to facilitate investigations.
He is believed to have acted as a middleman for the MBJB officer in obtaining bribes from contractors in return for approving work carried out by the said contractors for projects issued in 2020 and this year.
The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009, which provides for a fine of five times the amount or value of the gratification, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment of up to 20 years upon conviction.
State MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrest to Bernama, and said the anti-graft agency will apply for a remand order against the suspect at the magistrates’ court here today.
On Tuesday, MACC arrested an MBJB officer for allegedly receiving gratification from contractors while he was with the Iskandar Puteri City Council. – Bernama, August 13, 2021
