KOTA KINABALU – Opposition parties should not miss the chance for reform and take up Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer to introduce a two-term limit for the prime minister and an anti-party-hopping law.
Society Empowerment and Economic Development of Sabah (SEEDS) in a statement today said the prime minister’s appeal to opposition MPs for bipartisan support will provide the opposition with an opportunity to rearrange the country’s administration.
“It is time to solve the political instability of the country through negotiation. All political parties should put aside their differences and focus on helping the people during the pandemic.”
It also said that the anti-party-hopping law is timely, and many have agreed that there has to be a mechanism to put a stop to party-switching by elected representatives.
“The limit for the prime minister’s tenure will also provide space for changes in Malaysia’s leadership, thus boosting the confidence of the rakyat in the democratic system.
“The suggestion to have half of the select committees chaired by opposition MPs will provide the opposition with more significant roles in the check and balance of government policies.
“As such, SEEDS suggests that parliamentary reforms be widened with the setting up of a permanent committee to shadow each ministry, so that each strategy and policy implemented by all ministries can be supervised by the MPs.” – The Vibes, August 14, 2021
