KUALA LUMPUR – All 31 Bersatu MPs and four aligned with the party have been advised to back Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the next prime minister.
Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Eddin Syazlee Shith told Malaysiakini that the advice came from president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
“We are all in agreement to support Ismail Sabri. That was the advice by our president,” said the Kuala Pilah MP.
He said he does not have further information on other matters such as the formation of a new cabinet.
“I was made to understand that Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin could be the candidate for deputy prime minister. This is based on hierarchy. He is our secretary-general.”
All MPs have to submit their statutory declarations to Istana Negara by 4pm today.
Last night, Barisan Nasional and Umno leaders met to hash out the matter of their prime minister candidate.
While Ismail Sabri looks to be the front runner, some Supreme Council members said the deal is not set in stone. – The Vibes, August 18, 2021
