KUALA LUMPUR – The unprecedented joint statement from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and the Pakatan Harapan presidential council on restoring political stability is a positive beginning to a new era, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

In a statement today, he said both sides reached an agreement within three days of Ismail Sabri expressing his willingness to cooperate with politicians across the aisle in the spirit of “Keluarga Malaysia”.

“Malaysian politics can no longer operate within the old framework. The paradigm shift in the practice of democracy must be more flexible, open and progressive.

“The prejudice against the opposition must end. Similarly, the negative perception of the government must change,” he said, adding that both sides are important partners.

The former minister expressed hope that the major steps initiated by Ismail Sabri will be followed by more inclusive actions from the government and opposition.

Malaysia belongs to all. It is the homeland of all, for all, and we must agree to work together on it.”

Khaled’s remarks come after Ismail Sabri and PH leaders, in a joint statement following their meeting, confirmed their agreement on bringing down the political temperature, in line with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree.

“A joint agreement was reached to empower Parliament as a more constructive and responsible institution in providing the necessary checks and balances to the executive, for the sake of transparency and the people.

“We also agree on and understand the importance of the judiciary’s independence, institutional reforms, and good government practices to ensure a conducive environment for the people and country under the Keluarga Malaysia context.” – The Vibes, August 25, 2021
