GEORGE TOWN – The Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak will officiate the opening of the state assembly, which will be held physically next Monday.

Penang Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang said the meeting will be conducted for nine days, involving 40 state assemblymen at the newly upgraded state assembly building at Jalan Light.

“We will abide by the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the National Security Council and the Health Ministry where all assemblymen will be told to undergo Covid-19 screenings before being allowed into the sitting,” he said today.

He said the assembly sitting, scheduled to begin with the opening speech by Fuzi on August 30, will go on until September 8.

However, Law said the media’s presence will not be allowed this time with the exception of representatives from Buletin Mutiara, the state government’s monthly bulletin.

“To reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmissions, only Buletin Mutiara is allowed to help cover and distribute news on the proceedings, while other media representatives may tune in to the live stream,” he said.

The last time the state assembly sitting was held physically was on October 12 last year, which lasted six days but earlier this year, the state government replaced the state assembly session, which could not be held during the emergency period, with a two-day informal engagement session in March at a hotel here. – Bernama, August 26, 2021
