GEORGETOWN – Former Bukit Tambun assemblyman Datuk Law Choo Kiang has been elected as the Penang assembly speaker for the third term here.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (Padang Kota-DAP) proposed his name and the assembly present seconded.
Law was the only name proposed.
Law, a lawyer, is believed to be among Penang’s longest-serving state speakers.
A state PKR leader, Law had also served as a state executive councillor previously.
Later, Chow led the 40 newly elected representatives to take their oath as assemblymen before Law.
They swore to uphold their duties as assemblymen and to fulfil their obligations to serve the rakyat here.

Penang is the first among six states to swear in elected assemblymen after the 15th state election was held earlier this month.
Later, the assembly sitting also nominated and confirmed Azrul Mahathir Aziz (Bayan Lepas-PH) as the new deputy state speaker for the present 15th term.
Before he adjourned the sitting sine die, Law reminded the assemblymen to debate responsibly and make the electorate proud of their performance during the coming sittings.
“Ensure that your presence can have an impact on your constituency and state. Be precise, constructive and professional when discharging your duties in the hall.”
The next sitting is scheduled for October when the state is expected to table its budget for next year. – The Vibes, August 29, 2023
