THE annual Penang Green Summit will focus on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive forward sustainability, as the state seeks to reinforce policies which include the plastic bag ban.

State executive councillor Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo said the gathering can inspire industry players and the relevant stakeholders to pivot to AI to use its expertise on sustainable practices.

"We can use AI for the practical elements and cost-effectiveness in unveiling new sustainable practices," he told a media briefing.

The summit, themed “AI for Sustainability”, would be held at the Penang Waterfront Convention Centre on November 12 and 13.

Sundarajoo, who oversees the portfolios of environment and housing, said that Penang must embrace technological advancements to remain competitive while protecting the environment.

“The future isn’t waiting for us. Change is happening now, and it’s moving faster than ever,” he said.

Sundarajoo said that Penang now has the ability to produce biodegradable plastic bags for the commercial market.

A trial run is being adopted, as Penang is piloting biodegradable and bio-compostable alternatives at selected food courts, markets, and wet markets across the state.

Sundarajoo said also that the summit would support the Penang2030 vision of building a Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation, while positioning Penang as a regional hub for AI-driven green innovation.

Summit chairperson Tan Soo Siang, who is a Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor, said the two - day programme would feature an AI HackFest, a conference, an exhibition, workshops and a gala dinner with a magician performance.

The summit would feature more than 20 speakers and industry experts, with over 200 delegates expected to attend.  - November 2, 2026.
