A NEIGHBOUR to Dr Wong Kar Lin, who recently died in a landslide at Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, said he has written to 15 state assemblymen on the island to seek a ban on hillslope development.
"The elected representatives assured me that the matter would be brought up in the next state legislative assembly sitting," said former Penang DAP secretariat officer Teh Kean Hooi.
He said the victim was a friend he met in church regularly and one who was prepared to offer help to his fellow parishioners when needed.
The late doctor's wake was held at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Island Park, where many came forward to pay their last respects.
The victim was believed to be preparing breakfast at his double-storey home in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong, on Sunday when the incident occurred.
"This tragedy could have been prevented if the retaining wall had been built behind Dr Wong's place or at least a thick sheet was laid down to cover the exposed hill slope," said Teh.
"Justice might be too late for Dr Wong, but I'm sure his family and the residents who are still around would demand answers from all involved parties, not more excuses,” he said.
The Penang DUN sitting begins this Friday and runs until November 6.
Teh said that the issue was raised frequently in the past four years, as the residents, including his family, were concerned over the hillside development overlooking their landed properties in Paya Terubong.
In 2018, nine foreign workers were killed in a landslide during the construction of the now-completed Jalan Bukit Kukus, which links the area with Bukit Jambul. – October 27, 2026
