MIRI – Ordinary folks in Sarawak called a total lockdown as record-high Covid-19 deaths and new infections raged across the state today.
Social media messages and appeals for a full movement control order (MCO) have been circulating among community groups, politicians, and public chat groups.
“We have to revert to a lockdown again. The situation is getting worse by the day,” said a doctor to The Vibes this evening.
The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat announced that 15 new deaths were confirmed today, in addition to 3,747 new cases.
Both figures are the highest the state has recorded for one day since the pandemic erupted early last year.
The 15 deaths confirmed today bring the coronavirus death tally in Sarawak to 560.
Interestingly, all the deaths, except for one, were of people above the age of 60.
In Kuching, there were nine fatalities involving five women aged 69, 79, 66, 76, and 60, and four men aged 70, 77, 80 and 97.
In Serian, two men aged 68 and 79 succumbed to the virus.
There was also a man aged 90 who died of the coronavirus in Samarahan, a man aged 24 in Betong, a woman aged 65 in Saratok, and a woman aged 66 in Sibu.
The secretariat said that 35 locations comprising villages, longhouses, housing estates, commercial sites, and workplaces, have been placed under enhanced MCO status.
