MIRI – Parti Sarawak Bersatu president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh has called on state government leaders to stop misleading the public by claiming herd immunity has been attained.
“The people of Sarawak are being misled into believing that life here is already returning to normal,” he said in a statement today.
“State leaders, including ministers, keep announcing to the public that Sarawak has already achieved herd immunity against Covid-19.
“Granted, we are doing well in the vaccination drive, but there are hundreds of thousands of people yet to be vaccinated, including teens and young children.
“Every day, we are seeing a surge in new infections and fatalities.
“Yesterday, Sarawak overtook Selangor as the top state in terms of fresh Covid-19 cases.
“State ministers’ claims of herd immunity have misled the rakyat into a false sense of security.”
The Bawang Assan assemblyman said even the World Health Organisation has yet to determine what exactly “herd immunity” constitutes in the context of Covid-19, given that the disease is relatively new.
“Sarawak leaders must stop harping on their claims of herd immunity, and work towards producing real results when it comes to lowering the infection and death rates.”
The state yesterday saw 3,714 fresh coronavirus cases – overtaking Selangor (2,126) – as well as 12 deaths.
Sarawak Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian yesterday warned people against socialising.
“The high infection rate is due to the Delta variant.
“Stop socialising and having unnecessary meet-ups. The variant can be transmitted by talking or singing; this makes the virus spread faster.”
Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii called on the state government to come up with a proper plan to tackle Delta.
“All we hear from state leaders is that Covid-19 is becoming endemic in Sarawak and we must learn to live with it.
“That makes the rakyat even more worried.”
Standard operating procedure enforcement and testing at Covid-19 hotspots must be stepped up, he said. – The Vibes, September 7, 2021
