TAWAU – Sabah police on Monday made their biggest drug bust yet, seizing over 300kg of syabu and detaining a local suspect at a regular roadblock.

Newly minted state police chief Datuk Idris Abdullah said the 49-year-old suspect was found with 303.15kg of the drugs in his four-wheel drive.

He said the seized drugs are worth RM10.9 million in street value, and that the arrest of the suspect has crippled a smuggling syndicate.

“The suspect was trying to avoid arrest at Membalua, near Batu 10 Tawau, by driving away in his vehicle at the police roadblock.

“Police gave chase and managed to arrest the suspect in Kg Batu Payung,” he said, adding that the drugs were found in five bags on the back seat of the vehicle.

Speaking to the press at the Tawau district police headquarters today, he said, the drugs were packed in 290 packages with the label “Guanyinwang” written on the plastic wraps.

Also present was Tawau district police chief Peter Umbuas.

“RM152,287 in cash was also seized from the suspect.

“The suspect is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, and will face the mandatory death penalty if found guilty,” he said.

He said the drugs may have been brought into Sabah from a neighbouring country, and were very likely being transported to another neighbouring nation.

He added that police are trying to identify the suspect’s accomplices, with the case referred to Bukit Aman for more information on the syndicate. – The Vibes, September 9, 2021
