[UPDATED] Japan terror notice: security agencies notified, IGP says no threat detected

KUALA LUMPUR – Following a notice issued by Japan to its citizens in Southeast Asia, Malaysia said it views the matter seriously and is closely monitoring the situation in the country.

In a statement today, Wisma Putra said it is aware of the security notice by Japan’s diplomatic mission to its citizens residing in Malaysia.

Wisma Putra advised the Malaysian embassy in Tokyo to maintain close communications with the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Additionally, Malaysian security agencies have been informed of the matter.

“The ministry has communicated this advisory on security threats to the relevant Malaysian authorities. We take this matter very seriously,” said Wisma Putra.

“Our security agencies, in particular police, are assessing the situation very carefully.”

Earlier today, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanee Sangrat tweeted that the Japanese Foreign Ministry has sent emails to Japanese citizens in Southeast Asia warning of possible terror attacks.

The Vibes reported that several Japanese embassies in the region, including Malaysia, have confirmed the notice issued.

Japanese nationals are urged to exercise caution and take measures to ensure their safety, including avoiding places that are possible terror targets.

These include “Western-owned” establishments and facilities like restaurants, hotels, public transport, markets, tourist areas, and other places that see large crowds, such as houses of worship.

Other locations marked as being at-risk are military, police and security-related facilities, as well as government facilities.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani in a statement said Malaysia’s national security and public order are under control.

He said as of now, police have not received intelligence on national security threats.

“The public is advised to remain calm and refrain from speculation. Police will ensure the nation remains safe, and have increased surveillance operations.”

Police said they are aware of the notice issued by the Japanese embassy in Malaysia today concerning potential terror attacks on places of interest. – The Vibes, September 13, 2021
