KUALA LUMPUR – The voice of Malaysian mothers married to foreigners on the issue of automatic citizenship for their children born abroad needs to be heard, said Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

The communications and multimedia minister expressed confidence that the cabinet will look into the matter in the spirit of “Keluarga Malaysia”.

“I am of the view that we must listen to the voices of Malaysian mothers,” he said in a brief statement tonight.

“As the matter touches on policy and legal aspects, I believe the cabinet is the most appropriate forum to scrutinise the matter in the spirit of Keluarga Malaysia.”

The Ketereh MP’s comments follow the Kuala Lumpur High Court’s decision on September 9 that children born overseas to Malaysian mothers are entitled to Malaysian citizenship.

The government yesterday filed an appeal against the ruling. – Bernama, September 14, 2021
