KOTA KINABALU – Emergency cash relief of RM1,000 per family will be extended to Kg Sugud flood victims in Penampang.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor said that, additionally, the 10 houses that were swept away by the floods will be rebuilt.
“We will ensure the 937 flood victims will receive assistance from the state and federal governments,” he said during a visit to Kg Sugud today.
The Sulaman assemblyman also instructed the Drainage and Irrigation Department to clear river waterways, citing long-term plans to end flood woes in the water catchment area.
He said one more package remains in the Penampang flood mitigation project to be completed, adding there are three projects overall in the district.
On Sunday, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan had said a RM9 million flood mitigation project for Sugud will be expedited.
The project has been awarded and will be completed in three years’ time.
Saying the disaster was caused by climate change, Jeffrey had said the RM9 million project will involve expanding the depth and width of Sg Sugud by 1.13km. – The Vibes, September 21, 2021
