KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s first Roman Catholic cardinal Rev Anthony Soter Fernandez died today at 12.35pm at the Little Sisters of the Poor home for the elderly in Cheras.

Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur communications and relations media officer Patricia Pereira said details of the wake and funeral will be confirmed later.

The news of his passing was posted on the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese website, stating that Fernandez, 88, had died peacefully at the home.

Fernandez was known as the Archbishop Emeritus of Kuala Lumpur, having led the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur for 20 years, before retiring in 2003. He was made cardinal in November 2016.

He was ordained a priest on December 10, 1966.

Fernandez was diagnosed with tongue cancer in November and was cared for at the home after undergoing immunotherapy and radiotherapy. – The Vibes, October 28, 2020
