KOTA KINABALU – The Kota Kinabalu City Hall took immediate action to clean up the Teluk Likas beach following a viral video showing the public beach here strewn with rubbish, uploaded last Friday.
In a statement today, DBKK Mayor’s Office communication and media unit officer Mohd Khairul Anwar Ahmad said that DBKK’s Solid Waste Management Department had taken 18 trips to the Kayu Madang landfill here to clear the area in two days.
He said seven lorries (five six-tonne lorries and two three-tonne lorries) were dispatched for the job on Friday and yesterday, with further cleaning work resuming today.
Last Friday, a Facebook user named Rain Ling Ling posted a 57-second-long video on Kota Kinabalu Kini’s Facebook page, showing the sad condition of the rubbish-filled beach.
Khairul said that the rubbish on the beach was believed to be caused by the flash flood in the area earlier this week.
He added the continuous heavy rain had raised the sea levels, washing rubbish, debris, and green waste to the beach from rivers around the area. – The Vibes, September 26, 2021
