KUALA LUMPUR – The claim that the Covid-19 Mu variant is in Malaysia has been refuted by the Health Ministry.
In a brief statement today, the ministry said the report by Indonesian-based news portal Suara.com on the Mu variant in Malaysia is false.
The ministry also urged the public to not spread fake news that can cause confusion among the community.
The public is advised to refer to the ministry’s official channels for the latest information.
Mu, known scientifically as B.1.621, has been classified as a “variant of interest” by the World Health Organisation (WHO) early September.
WHO said the variant has mutations that indicate a risk of resistance to vaccines and stressed that further studies were needed to better understand it.
WHO currently identifies four Covid-19 variants of concern, including Alpha, which is present in 193 countries, and Delta, present in 170 countries.
After being detected in Colombia, Mu has since been reported in other South American countries and in Europe. – The Vibes, October 1, 2021
