GEORGE TOWN – Youth eligible to vote are encouraged to check their information with the Election Commission (EC) through the Automatic Voter Pre-Registration Review Programme (SPPA) starting today.

Penang youth and sports exco Soon Lip Chee said in a statement that the programme is implemented with the purpose of displaying voter information and allowing those who are eligible to vote to check their records with the EC.

“The SPPA ends October 31 and for a month, any Malaysian citizen aged 18 and above who has yet to register to vote can check their information and make a complaint with the EC.

“Eligible parties can check through the MySPR SPPA application, on their website or attend one of the 604 SPPA checkpoints nationwide and scan the QR code of the parliamentary constituency placed.”

He also advised those who have changed their address to update the information on their identity cards at the National Registration Department by October 31.

“With the implementation of the SPPA programme, I am confident that the 18-year-olds can participate in the election more proactively and comprehensively, whether they are voters or election candidates.”

During the Penang assembly three weeks ago, Soon had proposed to lower the eligibility age of candidates to stand for state seats, from 21 to 18.

The Penang State Constitution (Amendment) Enactment 2021 Bill on Lowering the Age Limit of State Assembly Candidates from 21 to 18 was then passed unanimously.

For inquiries, the public can reach out to the EC at 03-8892 7018 or visit the Election Commission of Malaysia website. – The Vibes, October 1, 2021
