MIRI – The Election Commission (EC) has tabled a comprehensive report to Parliament, complete with details on a major re-delineation of electoral boundaries being carried out in Sarawak.

Senator Abun Sui Anyit today said the EC report was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat earlier this week.

“Parliament has received a report from the EC on the re-delineation of electoral boundaries in Sarawak.

“The re-delineation exercise is underway. The last such re-delineation exercise carried out in Sarawak was eight years ago,” he said in a statement.

Abun is deputy chairman of Sarawak PKR.

He is also Sarawak Pakatan Harapan information chief.

His statement follows a report by The Vibes that at least two new large parliamentary constituencies for Sarawak have been tentatively approved, one each in the current Miri and Hulu Rajang seats.

Abun today said the EC must start the process of briefing political parties in Sarawak with regards to the new constituencies being drawn up.

“Every political party must be briefed by the EC on the new constituencies being planned.

“The EC must then convene meetings in the districts in Sarawak to brief the affected constituents on the re-delineation exercise,” he said.

Abun called on the EC to deploy its staff to remote locations where a scattered population of natives still live, to brief them on how their boundaries will be affected, he said.

Sarawak currently has 31 parliamentary constituencies and 81 state ones. – The Vibes, November 11, 2023
