KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) has announced a nationwide public consultation exercise for the Communications and Multimedia Content Code of Malaysia 2021.

With the support of the Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the exercise is aimed at gathering feedback from members of the public on proposed revisions to the Content Code and will take place from the end of September to early November 2021.

The Content Forum is an independent self-regulatory industry organisation registered under MCMC to oversee and promote self-regulation of content over electronic network mediums.

In a statement issued by Go Communications on behalf of Content Forum, it said the review will allow for the consideration of public consultation findings before the final draft is submitted for registration by MCMC.

It further stated that input from the public is important as the new version of the content code will continue to be a reference for the interpretation of offences under Section 211 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

“The focus for this public consultation is to ensure sustainment of good practices in the content environment, which helps increase consumer protection,” they said.

Among the proposed revisions include guiding creators on content creation while protecting consumers from those that exploit religion or children and third-party influencers who do not disclose paid arrangements.

It added that the revisions will further empower and protect the rights of disabled people and safeguard the public from online abuse and gender-based violence.

Members of the public who are interested in providing feedback for this public consultation can access further information at its website. – The Vibes, October 4, 2021
