KUALA LUMPUR – Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming was confirmed positive for Covid-19 following a test he took at the Parliament building after lunch today.

In a series of tweets, Ong said he conducted his Covid-19 self-test at 3.30pm, which came back positive.

“Confirmed by a PCR test an hour later. I don’t have any symptoms. I will be quarantining at home for the next 10 days.

“Will spend the next hour or so alerting my close contacts,” he stated in his tweet.

The DAP lawmaker also confirmed that he had tested negative during a similar test last Wednesday in Parliament.

“Not sure who or where I encountered a close contact. Will be spending the next two weeks catching up on constituency cases and writing a few press statements.”

Ong stressed that the people must accept the fact that this virus is endemic.

“The testing protocols in Parliament show that we can continue to work and operate normally. The vaccines also means that a large majority of Covid-19 cases among the vaccinated will have no or very less symptoms (like mine).

“We should continue to push for vaccination among the vaccine-hesitant, the undocumented migrants, and teenagers,” he added.

Ong’s announcement comes after Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun today stated that no MP or Parliament staff has been reported to be infected with Covid-19 since the Dewan Rakyat sitting started on September 13 as regular tests were carried out.

As such, Azhar allowed MPs to remove their face masks while giving speeches and during debates.

However, he also ordered all MPs to wear their face masks after giving their speech. – The Vibes, July 31, 2021
