KUALA LUMPUR – A PAS senator suggested that Korean dramas (K-dramas) are among the factors causing suicides among Malaysia’s teenagers.

Speaking during the Dewan Negara sitting, today, Senator Mohd Apandi Mohamad, while debating the 12th Malaysia Plan suggested that suicides occur among Malaysia’s youth due to the fact that K-dramas depict suicides as a common occurrence for individuals who feel they have failed in life.

“Agree or not, when there’s a failure, there’s suicide. Failure, then suicide.

“Is it because they are influenced by these Korean dramas?” Apandi said.

PKR Senator Fadhlina Sidek agreed that there are many factors causing suicides among teenagers.

She added that the media plays a significant role in reporting suicide cases, saying ethics is of utmost importance.

“The way the media reports suicides are very important,” Fadhlina said.

Additionally, Fadhlina also touched on the importance of a social safety net for the underaged, given they are part of a vulnerable group.

Given that, Fadhlina recommended the introduction of a National Gender Action Plan, which can manifest as a vehicle to promote equality.

“This means equality is an evolving process in the context of being substantive, understanding discrimination and social equity taking into account local factors concerning culture and religion.

“This brings the importance of presenting a gender responsive budget that will be the substance of the National Gender Action Plan.

“All of society should have an understanding of gender, which is based on social equity as well as human rights especially with an understanding of gender-based violence and the pursuit to eliminate gender discrimination,” she said. – The Vibes, October 13, 2021
