KUALA LUMPUR – The country recorded 799 new Covid-19 cases today, the first time the numbers have trended upward since Monday.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the latest infections bring the total number of positive cases to 30,889.

Of the new cases, a total of 636 cases (or 79.6%) involve locales that are under a conditional movement control order (CMCO), namely Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Sabah.

Hisham said Sabah continues to record the highest number of infections with 466 cases.

There were also three new deaths as of 12pm today, bringing the cumulative total to 249.

Additionally, 90 individuals are currently at admitted at intensive care units, 20 of whom require ventilator support.

Hisham said the Health Ministry has also identified eight new clusters today, three of which are in Sabah (Rumah Merah, Telipok and Sembulan clusters), two in Selangor (Merpati and Astaka), and one each in Labuan (Titian), Negri Sembilan (Gala) and Johor (Meldrum).

On concerns that hospitals are stretched and may reach full capacity with an increasing number of cases, especially in Sabah, Noor Hisham allayed those fears, noting the high number of daily recoveries.

“Although there are more new cases every day, there are also many who are discharged. As such, these empty beds can be used for those newly infected,” he said.

According to Hisham, there are currently 16,060 beds allocated for Covid-19 cases nationwide, of which only 40% are occupied, while in Sabah, 47% of 8,375 beds are in use. – The Vibes, October 30, 2020
