KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been appointed Barisan Nasional backbenchers’ club chairman, ahead of the parliamentary session that begins tomorrow.

The Malaysian Insight reported that the former prime minister’s appointment will see him getting a position in the Dewan Rakyat and put him in the thick of key matters, as the House prepares for the tabling of Budget 2021 on Friday.

“Najib was appointed ahead of the important Parliament meeting so that he can direct the BN backbenchers in the House,” the portal quoted a source as saying.

BN has 43 MPs, with 23 of them being backbenchers.

Najib is expected to drive his coalition’s Budget debate to reflect Umno’s demands.

His criminal cases have been suspended due to the conditional movement control order in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Putrajaya, which ends on November 9.

Najib relinquished all his positions in BN and Umno when the pact lost the 2018 general election. Last July, he was made BN adviser. – The Vibes, November 1, 2020
