KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia Youth and Students Democratic Movement (Dema) is urging institutes under the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) to hold physical convocations, given the government is already loosening Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).
In a statement, Dema said they were alerted about higher learning institutions refusing to hold physical convocations without valid and formal reasons given to students, despite calls to do otherwise.
“Graduates’ physical recognition for their achievements should not be robbed by mismanagement and bureaucracy by those under MoHE,” Dema stated.
Pointing out that Malaysia may have reached herd immunity, and the government’s relaxation of SOPs, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia has already organised a successful physical convocation in April.
They went on to urge MoHE to refrain from being silent and publish an official statement on the matter.
In the event that physical convocations cannot be held, Dema says MoHE must provide clear justifications.
“It is every student’s dream to graduate and every parent’s dream to witness their children’s graduation.
“Please do not take away the physical experience from this proud moment for millions of Malaysians.
“Dema requests for MoHE to stop being silent and publish an official statement on this issue.” – The Vibes, October 26, 2021
