KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Trades Union Congress general council member A. Sivananthan is calling for a thorough investigation following the death of an Associated Pan Malaysia Cement (APMC) staff member at their Chemor plant last week.
Referring to a previous statement from the Occupational Safety and Health Department (DOSH), Sivananthan expressed hope that a thorough investigation will be conducted.
“Following the DOSH statement on how the accident occurred based on its preliminary investigation, I hope there will be a subsequent, thorough investigation.
“I hope the investigation will be transparent and hold the responsible company accountable if there has been a breach of safety policies and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994,” Sivananthan told The Vibes.
On October 18, DOSH released a press statement concerning an incident that occurred at a cement plant in Chemor involving two individuals on October 14.
According to the statement, two workers, a Bangladeshi and an Indian, had suffered severe burns while cleaning out dust from a pulverised coal bin.
Both victims were brought to the hospital, where one succumbed to his injuries a day later.
DOSH stated that it is conducting investigations and will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone responsible.
Meanwhile, APMC confirmed the incident with The Vibes.
“An accident occurred at our cement plant on October 14 which unfortunately led to one fatality among our subcontractors.
“We are saddened this incident occurred despite having strict standard operating procedures in place.
“Our health and safety team is carrying out a detailed investigation with authorities into the cause of the accident.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” APMC said in a brief statement to The Vibes. – The Vibes, October 27, 2021
