GEORGE TOWN – Penang Umno veteran Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff has lambasted PAS, saying the aim to unite the dominant Malay parties is “not logical and irrelevant”.

He said this is because Bersatu is a party of “frogs” with former Umno and PKR members.

“It is better for PAS to think about how the party can reunite with Amanah. PAS betrayed Muafakat Nasional with Umno as the Islamist party is willing to sacrifice contesting under its own banner,” he said in a statement today.

Yussof also likened PAS to a Malay saying – “ikan cencaru, ikan gelama, dapat kawan baru, tinggal kawan lama (abandoning an old friend after getting a new one)”.

He said PAS abandoned Umno – which is an old friend – after getting into bed with Bersatu.

“Is this the attitude of PAS? Is it more focused on self-interest than eternal friendship?

“PAS’ act of mortgaging the dignity of the party in the interest of their position is something very surprising and shameful.”

PAS on Tuesday apparently rejected cooperation with Umno in the upcoming Melaka polls by opting to contest under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) banner instead.

Its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang said the decision to operate under PN was decided by the PAS central working committee during its meeting yesterday evening.

“The decision was made after taking into account the guidance of PAS’ Syura Council, which met on October 31, in line with Clause 84 of the PAS constitution,” Hadi said in a brief statement. – The Vibes, November 5, 2021
