KUALA LUMPUR – Singaporean human rights lawyer M. Ravi – representing Malaysian Nagaenthran Dharmalingam who is on death row – is alleging intimidation from the island nation’s attorney-general’s (AG) office.
In a Facebook post today, Ravi alleged that Singapore’s AG filed a personal cost application, which he said is for the Court of Appeal to punish him.
“This is nothing to me but another intimidation. I will not comment further, but will address the court at 2.30pm,” Ravi earlier posted on his Facebook page.
Nagaenthran, who was scheduled to be hanged to death tomorrow morning over a drug trafficking conviction, is awaiting an appeal over the constitutionality of his execution.
Until disposal of the case by the Court of Appeal, Nagaenthran’s execution has been stayed.
His lawyer Ravi will question the constitutionality of executing Nagaenthran, who is said to be intellectually disabled.
In addition to his disability, Ravi said his client does not understand what transpired in court, given he is only proficient in Tamil.
“His previous legal team led by Eugene Thuraisingam is not proficient in Tamil, based on my own assessment.”
Nagaenthran, who has an IQ of 69, was sentenced to death in 2011 for trafficking 42.72g of diamorphine into Singapore in 2009.
His hearing at the Singapore Court of Appeal today is scheduled at 2.30pm. – The Vibes, November 9, 2021
