KUALA LUMPUR – After a march in the United Kingdom, Klima Action Malaysia (Kamy) is calling on Malaysians to demand radical action to combat climate change.
Speaking to The Vibes, Kamy vice-chair Hailey Tan said around 100,000 individuals participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26) march on Sunday from Kelvingrove Park to Glasgow Green, with a number of Malaysian students there.
The reason behind this COP26 march, she said, was to call out world leaders over their inaction to combat climate change.
“This is an act of global solidarity with everyone suffering from the climate crisis. It is important for our voices to be heard, for the truth to be spoken, polluters made accountable, especially when demanding real solutions.”
On the success of the march, Tan said it definitely caught the attention of many, but still more work is required to pursue real radical change.
Nevertheless, she added that the march was victorious in showing the world how much power the people hold as a collective when they stand together.
“Malaysia should take note of the power that people hold as a united front to demand change.
“I think it is important for Malaysians to see the power we hold as a united front, to be empowered to speak up, to make spaces for vulnerable people to take action and to collaborate and organise effectively.
“Malaysians are already facing the climate crisis and there’s no better time to demand radical action than now.”
Malaysians were part of the march at Scotland on Sunday; however, Kamy said it was not able to share details on the number of Malaysians taking part, citing “safety issues”.
The COP26 is being held at the SEC Centre in Glasgow, Scotland from October 31 to November 12, and is the 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
At the same time, organisers held the biggest protest in Glasgow on Sunday against perceived inadequate action at the conference over climate change-related issues. – The Vibes, November 10, 2021
