MIRI – A 16-year-old boy who died at his house in Sibu on November 7 has been confirmed to have succumbed to Covid-19.
The special-needs teenager was rushed to Sibu Hospital after his family found him unconscious at home.
He was pronounced dead after being brought to the emergency unit.
In a statement today, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said that a post-mortem revealed that his death was due to the virus.
He is one of six Covid-19 fatalities in the state confirmed today.
The other fatalities were a man and a woman both aged 83 who died at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, a woman aged 93 in Sibu Hospital, a man aged 54 in Sri Aman, and a man aged 63 in Mukah.
The day also saw another 418 new infections reported in the state, with 15 patients of the new cases being admitted to intensive care units.
Kuching district recorded 150 new cases, Miri (78), Sibu (38), and numerous other districts reported below 30 cases each.
Meanwhile, Sarawak is preparing to have its 12th state election after the state assembly was dissolved on November 3. Polling must be held within 60 days from the date.
The public have expressed fears that there will be more Covid-19 outbreaks and deaths as variants like Delta are still raging throughout the state.
Contrary to an early polling date sought by the ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak, demands from the public are growing for the Election Commission (EC) not to fix the election this year.
The EC has been called to set January 2 as the date for polling as it will still fall within the 60-day limit. – The Vibes, November 12, 2021
