KUALA LUMPUR – Pakatan Harapan (PH) has been dragged into the controversy surrounding former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz and husband Datuk Tawfiq Ayman over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd-linked (1MDB) funds.
Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim (Baling-BN) took the opportunity to point out that PH appointed Zeti as Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) chairman and as a member of the Council of Eminent Persons.
“To get back 1MDB monies and protect BNM’s reputation, I ask the government what actions it will take after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revelations.”
On November 19, MACC announced that Singapore returned RM65 million in 1MDB-linked funds that were obtained from a company controlled by Tawfiq.
Azeez said in the Dewan Rakyat today that in previous news reports, Zeti was quoted as saying that any allegations relating 1MDB funds to her family were false.
In reply, Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (Santubong-GPS) said the matter is currently being investigated by police.
“Police have already taken over the investigations against those named by the honourable Baling.
“Since the investigation is at play, we should wait for its conclusion for an answer.”
This morning, Azeez (Baling-BN) brought up the issue, questioning Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi (Tumpat-PAS) if he agrees to a MACC investigation over the allegations implicating Zeti and her family.
“Do you agree that MACC must investigate accusations against former BNM governor Tan Sri Zeti that alleged RM65 million of 1MDB-linked funds were being held by a company tied to her husband?
“This is something the people need and want to know.”
Che Abdullah agreed with Azeez’s calls for an investigation given the public interest in the matter.
Che Abdullah told Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun that Azeez’s suggestions should be included in the Budget 2022 committee-stage debate. – The Vibes, November 22, 2021
