GEORGE TOWN – Retired badminton great Datuk Lee Chong Wei is set to be conferred an honorary doctorate in sports science by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) during its upcoming 58th convention here. 

In a statement today, USM vice-chancellor Prof Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan announced that former vice-chancellor Datuk Asma Ismail will also be conferred with the Prof Emerita title.

“The convocation ceremony is set to take place at Istana Arau, Perlis, on December 2 at 10.30am, followed by the second session till the 10th session at Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra USM, Penang, between December 13 and 21.”

Faisal Rafiq said 5,964 graduates will be receiving their degree scrolls – comprising 1,899 individuals for PhD and masters, 4,031 individuals (bachelor’s degree), and 34 individuals (Diploma in Nursing). 

“Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalulail, who is also USM chancellor, has consented to chairing the first session involving the awards to the five main recipients.

“The other honorary recipients include industrialist David Lacey (honorary doctorate for science), former USM academician Zhari Ismail (Prof Emeritus), and top honours student Khaw Teng Kang who will receive the Chancellor’s Gold Medal,” he said.

The remaining convocation sessions would be presided over by USM pro-chancellors Tan Sri Zulkefli A. Hassan, Tan Sri Mustafa Mansur, and Tan Sri M. Jegathesan.

Faisal Rafiq said USM will observe strict standard operating procedures at the convocation sessions, whereby only fully vaccinated graduates can attend the event. – The Vibes, November 29, 2021
