[UPDATED] Discount period on traffic summons extended till Dec 31

KUALA LUMPUR – It is good news for those who have unpaid traffic summons as police have given an extension to the discount period – this time until December 31.

This comes a day after the Road Transport Department (RTD) extended its summons discount period to December 15 following the crash of the MyBayar Saman and MySikap portals, and counter shutdown at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

In a press conference in KLCC today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani admitted that due to the overwhelming response by the public, it is a challenge for authorities to control and supervise a large number of people to enforce the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“We had no choice but to comply with SOPs to ensure social distancing, that’s why we closed all counters.”

He added that the police will still put in efforts to ensure the public can pay their traffic summons nationwide with discounts.

“The public can pay their summons at a discounted rate up until December 31. The public can also utilise already available applications to make payments as well, however, I received reports that there are difficulties accessing these portals due to high visitor traffic.”

Since December 9, Acryl Sani said more than 2.3 millions summons have been paid with an estimated collection of RM109 million.

Earlier today, a video surfaced on Bernama’s Twitter page showing Acryl Sani attending the 100-day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia event at KLCC, surrounded by crowds and drawing concerns over the apparent lack of social distancing. The video was removed an hour after it was posted. 

Speaking briefly to The Vibes, Batu MP P. Prabakaran said the organisers of the event should be compounded.

“The law applies equally to everyone. Regardless of status and rank, everyone must be treated equally under the law.

“Any programmes that breach Covid-19 SOPs must be compounded.”

Yesterday, the RTD extended the summons discount period to December 15 after its counters at the 100-day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia programme in KLCC were shut.

In an announcement on social media, the RTD said summons can be paid at all its state offices and branches, as well as offices in UTCs nationwide, subject to directives from the Finance Ministry and state.

Previously, in conjunction with the 100-day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia programme that began on Thursday, the police force and the RTD were offering up to 80% discounts for outstanding summons.

According to traffic police, summons issued in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya would receive an up to 80% discount, while compounds issued in other states would see an up to 70% reduction.

The discounts were also applicable at KLCC payment counters on December 9 to 12, from 9am to 6pm – especially as the MyBayar Saman portal was down due to heavy user traffic.

However, summons discount counters at KLCC were ordered to close on Friday for breaching Covid-19 SOPs.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the organisers of the 100-day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia programme were also fined RM1,000 for failing to ensure physical distancing and causing congestion in the event hall. – The Vibes, December 12, 2021
