PORT DICKSON – The Negri Sembilan Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) will investigate claims by residents of Taman Pinggiran Sg Kelamah, Gemas that the flood warning siren did not work when floodwaters rose in the area two days ago.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, however, said the heavy rain may have caused the siren to be inaudible to residents in the area.
“A similar situation happened in Ampangan, Seremban where the siren was working but could not be heard due to the heavy rain.
“We will investigate (the matter); maybe we will increase the volume of the sirens further or install more sirens. We plan to increase the number of sirens. We are currently installing the system in several districts,” he told reporters after a programme to distribute 5A forms, a notice that allows the recipient to apply for land titles, to eight residents of Kg Chuah here today.
Based on state DID information, 22 flood sirens have been installed in high-risk areas to give early warning to residents when disaster strikes.
Yesterday, a news portal reported that residents in Taman Pinggiran Sg Kelamah were disappointed when the flood siren failed to function, causing victims to be evacuated to a temporary relief centre at SK Sg Kelamah without any extra clothes as water entered their homes very quickly.
In the state, Aminuddin said Tampin district was hit the hardest by the floods, recording the highest number of victims – 1,400 individuals from 396 families out of the total 2,037 flood victims in the state as of 8am.
Meanwhile, he said the route to the Gunung Telapak Buruk transmitting station in Jelebu is still not passable to all traffic following a landslide, which is being cleared. – Bernama, January 3, 2022
