KUALA LUMPUR – Lawmaker Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin (Hang Tuah Jaya-PH) today took the government to task for its mishandling of the floods that hit the nation on December 18.
During the special parliamentary session today, Shamsul questioned if state assets are sufficient to manage floods on a large scale.
Shamsul said that when he went on the ground to assist flood victims, many questioned the army’s absence.
“I want to ask the defence minister, who was abroad when the floods hit, about this.
“We have apps like WhatsApp that are enough to coordinate the assets we have to assist victims,” Shamsul said.
The PKR MP then urged Putrajaya to list the assets it has to manage floods and called upon the Finance Ministry to allocate funds where necessary.
“In terms of security, based on my analysis, enemies don’t need bullets if they want to attack us.
“All they need is rainwater,” Shamsul added.
On the issue of logging, Shamsul drew attention to his batik shirt which he said in jest was designed to look like logged forests in Pahang.
Echoing opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Shamsul pressed the government to make logging concessions accessible to the public.
“We want to encourage the public to take legal actions under tort law.
