KUALA LUMPUR − Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will not defend the Gambir state seat in the upcoming Johor election.
Speaking to reporters prior to Bersatu’s supreme council meeting tonight, Muhyiddin said that the decision would open doors to allow fresh faces from the party to contest in the upcoming state polls.
“I may not be contesting. It is also left to the party leaders as to who will decide the candidates.
“I want to focus my time on more pressing issues such as on Parliament and managing our party at the central level.
“So, I want to give opportunities to our leaders in Johor,” Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
During the 14th general election, Muhyiddin won the Gambir state assembly seat after obtaining a 3,088-majority beating Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk M Asojan and PAS’ Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed.
The Election Commission is expected to announce dates for nomination and voting after a special meeting on February 9.
The Johor polls come after Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar assented to the state’s legislative assembly dissolution last Saturday. − The Vibes, January 25, 2022
