KUALA LUMPUR – The Health Ministry’s top guns have reminded those celebrating the Chinese New Year to exercise caution as they relish the auspicious festival with family and friends.
In particular, both Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah have urged for self-testing to be conducted prior to visitations, to avoid the spread of Covid-19 infection.
Their messages were delivered in their Chinese New Year greetings, which were uploaded on the Health Ministry’s website this morning.
“For those who are celebrating with your family, the most important thing is to self-test and protect the vulnerable people in your family,” Dr Noor Hisham said.
“Although the Covid-19 situation is currently stabilising and improving, please comply with all public health and social measures. The onus and responsibility is on everyone to protect our families and ourselves.
“May the Almighty guide and protect us all to end this pandemic in time.”
Khairy, meanwhile, noted the recent surge in Covid-19 infections due to the spread of the more transmissive Omicron variant.
However, he is confident that with the high vaccination rate and adherence to strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), Malaysians are able to enjoy the festive period safely.
“Conduct self-testing before you visit your families and friends and always abide by the SOPs during this period.
“May the Year of the Tiger – which is associated with courage, competency, confidence and ambition – bring us out of this pandemic.”
Malaysia has recorded a steady increase in Covid-19 cases in the past week, with Khairy warning on January 26 that the country should expect a surge in infections.
The minister had said that the country’s healthcare system is prepared to face this surge, while noting that serious cases in Categories 3, 4 and 5 have been on the decline.
As of yesterday, Malaysia has 54,780 active cases, with 934 individuals currently admitted to hospital on a seven-day average. – The Vibes, February 1, 2022
