KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has been urged by Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang to reconvene the special committee on pandemic management, seeing that its members have not met since November 8.
Lim said in a statement that this move should be part of a “collective effort to involve all stakeholders and ensure the nation’s recovery will proceed as planned.”
He added that it is also to ensure that the voters’ democratic rights in the Johor election on March 12 are not violated or suppressed in the name of the Omicron wave.
Meanwhile, Lim warned against the rising cases in Johor, saying the state has 2,860 new cases today, the highest in the two-year pandemic.
The previous peak for Johor was 2,785 cases on August 26 last year.
“In the last two weeks, Johor with 21 Covid-19 deaths had the second highest number of Covid-19 deaths after Perak, with 24 deaths.
“There were 147 Covid-19 deaths in Malaysia as compared to 31 in Singapore in the last two weeks.”
He also called on Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to “devise a new strategy to reduce the number of Covid-19 deaths to the lowest number possible.”
“Although the Omicron variant is more transmissible and is not more severe or deadly as Delta, it is completely unacceptable that there were 24 Covid-19 deaths in one day on Friday.”
Malaysia today logged another 22,802 infections, as the cumulative cases breach the three million mark.
With today’s numbers, the country’s total coronavirus cases number at 3,019,163.
According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, 22,698 cases (99.54%) are Category 1 (5,029) and 2 (17,669).
Meanwhile, 82 (0.36%) cases are Category 3, 14 patients in Category 4 and eight in Category 5. – The Vibes, February 12, 2022
