BUTTERWORTH – Parents and alumni of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Assumption here today launched a special fund to “buy” and save the 89-year-old school and its land.
Alumni representative Mohd Aminuddin Baqy Mohd Noor said the existence of the fund is an initiative that proves the seriousness of all parties to see the school remain operational.
“We hope more parties will also help maintain this historic school, regardless of parents, the public, or the state government.
“We all want to see this school continue to produce excellent generations in the future and hopefully many will contribute to this fund,” he told reporters today.
Aminuddin said the special fund is currently only open to parents and alumni of SK Assumption who are willing to donate to save the school.
“This fund has not been opened for the public to donate. However, we hope that if any parties want to help buy this building, we can meet with Save Assumption School Joint Task Force spokesman Vernon Fernandez.”
When asked on the amount needed to be raised for the purpose, Aminuddin said both the school building and land are worth a total of RM10 million in value.
Meanwhile, parents also expressed disappointment as 53 students received letters of dispersal to nearby schools last Monday without any discussion with the school.
A mother, Nazirah Mohd Salihu, 43, said she was upset because her son had to report to SK St Mark, Butterworth next Monday, even though the school term will end on February 28th.
“It is too short. The Education Ministry previously informed us to apply to postpone the evacuation of SK Assumption’s building and site until the Term 3, 2021/2022 school session ends in March.
“Although our children have to report to the new school in the last week of the term, we are upset because there was no discussion and we only received a letter yesterday.”
On January 24, the Education Ministry said in a statement that 53 students and teachers of SK Assumption will be dispersed to several other schools near it.
The decision was made as the school building and site belongs to Sri Avenue Sdn Bhd at present.
Taking into account the ongoing school session, the Education Ministry has also applied to postpone the evacuation of the school building and site until the end of the Term 3, 2021/2022 school session in March.
The Vibes had reported earlier that the school in Bagan Dalam will cease operations from February 28 as the private landowner is seeking the return of the land as soon as possible. – The Vibes, February 17, 2022
